FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What Is Psychotherapy & Counselling?

They are processes that allow a person to come to a fuller understanding of their abilities, difficulties, motivations or worries, in conjunction with the therapist. This confidential relationship is mutually trusting and can continue for months or even years.

Each of us is unique and able to change. People come to psychotherapy with a wide variety of issues and emotional difficulties they want to address.

What Benefits can be Expected? Therapy can help you to move towards your full potential in life. It is empowering and can help people to find their voice after years of being silenced. It can also help you to find relief from anxiety, peace of mind.

If you are considering beginning psychotherapy/counseling, you may or may not know what the problem is, or what is
causing your distress or emotional pain.

Where is your practice based?

My practice address is below:

1 Highbury Crescent

Highbury & Islington

N5 1RN

What sort of difficulties might you be able to help with?

I have helped people with issues and difficulties including depression, anxiety, relationship and family difficulties, bereavement, addiction, stress, burn-out, feeling stuck, post-traumatic stress, addictions, self-harm and eating disorders. Issues including facing a difficult life change – birth of a child, adoption, divorce, death, illness and so on.

What kind of therapy do you offer?

I offer attachment-based psychoanalytic psychotherapy.  My psychotherapy is also relational. I am also trained in the Self-Leadership and developmental models and use aspects of them in session. Where there is an agreement, I can also provide a full self-leadership (IFS) psychotherapy.

Do you have evening appointments?

My present practice hours are from Tuesday to Friday. Please make an enquiry as evening appointments are sometimes available.

What can I expect at the first appointment with my therapist?

At first, and sometimes this can take extra consultation, I will take your history and we will explore your current issues. We will then decide together if spending some time in therapy would be of benefit to you. You will be able to ask questions and find out more about the therapeutic process. More importantly, we can both decide whether to continue working together.

How frequent are sessions?

Sessions are usually once a week. There can sometimes be times when it is clinically appropriate to have sessions more or less frequently.

How long are the sessions?

Sessions are 50 minutes long and take place at the same time on the same day of every week except for holiday times.

How much does psychotherapy cost?

Sessions range between £60 and £90 depending on the time of day, frequency and circumstances.

What happens if I have to cancel a regular session?

Once therapy starts, the same time is set aside every week to maintain the regularity and ensure continuity of your sessions for the duration of your therapy. To ensure this, payment is due for all sessions, including the ones you cannot attend.

How early in therapy will I begin to see positive changes?

After four to six sessions you will probably have an idea whether the therapy is likely to be beneficial. It is often helpful to have a review with your therapist at this point to decide whether to continue or terminate.

Long or Time Limited Therapy. How do I know which is suitable?

Psychotherapy has no set limit on its duration. If you are looking to concentrate on an immediate issue, you may decide to spend between a few sessions to a few months and stop at the point where you feel the particular issue has been laid to rest. On the other hand, people decide on long term therapy to work through more complicated and deeper issues. Long term therapy may take up to a year or a few years.

How do I end psychotherapy?

You may choose to end therapy at any time. Normally, either or both of us may reach the conclusion to terminate along the line. It is always beneficial to explore this decision together before working towards ending on a date that you and I agree on.
